Discrimination
Quote 1:
“My faceless neighbor spoke up:
“Don’t be deluded. Hitler has made it clear that he will annihilate all Jews before the clock strikes twelve.”
I exploded:
“What do you care what he said? Would you want us to consider him a prophet?
His cold eyes stared at me. At last he said, wearily:
“I have more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people.”
― Elie Wiesel, Night
In setting the scene for this quote, Elie is in a hospital at the concentration camp. His neighbor makes this outrageous statement about Hitler and it shows you how much these people have gone through. Hitler promised to annihilate the Jews and kill as many of them as he could and so far he has done so. He has ostracized them, separated them from their families, worked them to death, and killed thousands of Jews as he said he would. In the quote the man is saying that he has more faith in Hitler’s word than anyone because he has delivered on his word of ethnic cleansing. This relates to ISIS and what they have promised to do to Christians in the middle east. They have kidnapped and killed dozens of people and have promised to kill many people just as one person did once. To those who have died at the hands of ISIS that might have had the same mindset in believing their promises of discrimination and killing. ISIS has a goal of cleansing of those who they do not see fit and that includes a large number of innocent civilian people.
Quote 2:
"The yellow star? So what? It's not lethal..."
(poor father! Of what then did you die?)
But new edicts were already being issued. We no longer had the right to frequent restaurants or cafes, to travel by rail, to attend synagogue, to be one the streets after six o'clock in the evening. Then came the ghettos."
- Elie Wiesel, Night
This quote is said in the time leading up to Elie and his family being forced into a concentration camp. In the quote Elie's dad is talking about how having the star of David isn't a big deal and he is trying to instill confidence that it is not a problem. Little did they know that this was the Germans first step in setting the Jews apart from the others, all because of a simple star. This little symbol meant to discriminate and set a group of people apart meant there ultimate fate in a concentration camp or death. It's this small act such as a star or in the case of ISIS saying you are not Muslim or are a different religion. ISIS targets those whose distinguish themselves in the middle east through a small thing such as religion. These two topics relate by trying to set apart people who they think less of or want to in the case of both ISIS and the Holocaust, want to get rid of entire races/religions.
Quote 3:
"I looked at my little sister, Tzipora, her blond hair neatly combed, her red coat over her arm: a little girl of seven"
-Elie Wiesel, Night
In this quote, Elie is talking about her little sister Tzipora. Tzipora was killed in the first concentration camp she was sent to along with her mother. The Germans were concerned with maintaing a Aryan race, which meant a person had to have light color skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. This shows you how much the Germans were concerned about eliminating the Jewish race, because they were willing to look over the traits of a person of the ideal German because she was Jewish. ISIS is doing similar things in the middle east, if you don't fit a certain mold that they think is superior. Those who are not of darker skin color and not muslim are discriminated against and often targeted and killed. ISIS goal is similar to that of the Germans, to have a ideal group of people.
Quote 4:
"Can this be true? This is the twentieth century, not the Middle Ages. Who would allow such crimes to be committed? How could the World remain silent?" - Elie Wiesel, Night
Elie Wiesl said this statement during his acceptance speech for his Noble Peace Prize. Looking at the events at the Holocaust it is hard to imagine that something that tragic actually happened. At the time of the Holocaust, it seems one man was able to lead thousands of people to kill millions with either people not knowing are no body acting. This one man was able to change the ideal and image in there mind to make being quite seem okay. Jews were thought so little of that it took millions to be lost before action was taken and other countries and people having to step in and see just how bad the damage was. We see these problems today with ISIS. ISIS has been a problem since 2004, but why is not getting media attention ? ISIS has taken over a certain area and put ideals and rules into place that people are either told to live by or to die by. Since 2004 ISIS has killed people, but it wasn't until they started killing Americans, did the world become interested in the situation. The world discriminated against who they thought was deserving and both this case of ISIS and the Holocaust are examples of it. With the Holocaust, it went on for years before people were liberated, why? ISIS was has been killling people since 2004 and is now in the news after killing an american, Why? If we wait and discriminate who needs help we are just as bad as those who are
